Video That's Finally On-Demand

NEW YORK - Akimbo seeks to bring the world of Internet video to your television set.
Remember the information superhighway? In the early 1990s, it was the catch phrase meant to foster hope and anticipation for the technological wonders that were then just around the corner. Along with his 1999 gaffe, where he unintentionally claimed credit for creating the Internet, "information superhighway" is another cultural remnant of former Vice President Al Gore's fascination with technology policy.
But more often than not, the information superhighway that Gore was talking about seemed to have more to do with interactive television and video-on-demand, and less with the Internet we know today. There was a time less than a decade ago when having cable TV meant having 30 or 40 channels, not the 500 or so we've come to expect with modern digital cable systems.
In many markets it's now possible to watch shows from networks like Showtime and HBO on demand, meaning you don't have to live by their schedules to see a show--you can what you want when you want without having to fuss with a VCR or even a TiVo (nasdaq: TIVO - news - people ) box to record it.
